Former President Donald Trump harshly criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer after a breakdown in negotiations over confirming a backlog of Trump’s executive branch nominees. As the Senate departed for its August recess without advancing the nominations, Trump took to social media to vent his frustration, telling Schumer to “GO TO HELL.”
The standoff stems from an attempt to confirm more than 130 pending nominees, many of whom would typically be approved quickly through unanimous consent or voice votes. However, Senate Democrats, using procedural tools, delayed those confirmations, frustrating Republicans and the Trump administration.
Trump had pushed for the Senate to stay in session to work through the list, but talks between Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Republican leadership — including Minority Leader John Thune (R-SD) — collapsed. According to Trump, Democrats were seeking over $1 billion in funding, potentially tied to foreign aid and NIH funding, in exchange for allowing some of the confirmations to proceed. He called the request “political extortion” and accused Schumer of caving to pressure from progressives.
“Senator Cryin’ Chuck Schumer is demanding over One Billion Dollars in order to approve a small number of our highly qualified nominees,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This demand is egregious and unprecedented… Tell Schumer… to GO TO HELL!”
Despite efforts to negotiate a deal that would allow for a two-stage vote — one before recess and another after — no agreement was reached. Thune noted that multiple proposals were floated but ultimately failed to stick.
As frustrations mounted, some Senate Republicans considered invoking the so-called “nuclear option” to change Senate rules and limit Democrats’ ability to delay the nominations. However, moderate GOP senators reportedly expressed hesitation, wary of eroding norms they may rely on in the future.
Thune allowed pro forma sessions to continue during the recess, a procedural step that blocks Trump from making recess appointments without Senate confirmation.
In response, Schumer framed the outcome as a win for Senate Democrats. “Donald Trump attempted to steamroll the Senate to put in place his historically unqualified nominees. But Senate Democrats wouldn’t let him,” Schumer wrote on X.
Trump, meanwhile, urged Republican lawmakers to reject the proposed deal and return home to campaign on the issue. “Do not accept the offer… Have a great RECESS and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” he posted.
The dispute leaves dozens of Trump administration appointments in limbo, with no clear path forward until the Senate returns from recess.
