Phnom Penh, Cambodia — Cambodia announced plans to nominate former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with helping to broker a cease-fire that ended a recent border conflict with Thailand.
Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol praised Trump’s diplomatic efforts during a press briefing in Phnom Penh on Friday, saying his intervention played a critical role in de-escalating the violence that erupted along the Cambodian-Thai border.
“We acknowledge his great efforts for peace,” Chanthol said, describing Trump as instrumental in halting the conflict. He emphasized that Trump met the Nobel criteria of advancing peace and international cooperation.
The cease-fire, brokered during negotiations in Malaysia on Monday, followed a week of heavy fighting that left at least 43 dead and displaced more than 300,000 people. The violence began after a land mine explosion injured five Thai soldiers, triggering mutual accusations and cross-border skirmishes.
Trump reportedly spoke with leaders from both Cambodia and Thailand, urging an immediate end to hostilities. According to U.S. officials, he warned that the United States would suspend trade discussions with both nations if the fighting continued.
Speaking during a visit to Scotland, Trump told reporters, “They’ve been fighting for 500 years intermittently. We solved that war — and we solved it through trade.” He added that he planned to personally congratulate both prime ministers, whom he described as “very different” but “leaders I got along with very well.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “President Trump made this happen. Give him the Nobel Peace Prize!”
Trump’s potential nomination adds to growing international calls for his recognition. Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had nominated Trump for the award, and Pakistani officials in June expressed similar intentions for his role in easing tensions with India.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the advancement of peace and cooperation between nations.
