Convicted murderer Bryan Kohberger appears with his characteristic blank stare and a faint smile in a new mugshot released just a day after he was sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murders of four University of Idaho students.
In the updated photo, Kohberger, 30, is seen wearing the same orange prison uniform marked “L” for large that he wore during his sentencing. His expression is vacant, and his pupils appear dilated. Compared to earlier photos, he looks noticeably thinner.
Kohberger’s appearance has changed significantly since his arrest in December 2022, when he appeared clean-shaven. In a mugshot taken last September, he had a fuller face and a beard.
He showed no visible emotion during the sentencing hearing Wednesday, even as grieving families delivered heart-wrenching victim impact statements. A handwritten note with a heart drawn on it was spotted on the defense table next to him. One of his attorneys later picked it up, smiled at him after he responded to a quiet question, and then took the note.
Kohberger was convicted of the 2022 killings of University of Idaho students Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho.
