Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that trade talks with Canada have been suspended until Ottawa eliminates certain unspecified taxes. The declaration, made during an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, introduces fresh tension into the U.S.-Canada trade relationship.
“We’re not going to continue trade talks with Canada until such time as they drop certain taxes,” Trump stated during the televised segment, without elaborating on which specific taxes were under scrutiny.
The move signals a hardline stance from Trump, potentially affecting the stability of trade terms under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which was enacted during his administration. The former president’s remarks suggest a shift in approach that may influence future Republican trade policy.
Trade experts warn that halting discussions could strain economic ties and complicate efforts to resolve long-standing trade disagreements.
As of Monday morning, Canadian officials have yet to issue a formal response to the announcement.
