Actor Jeff Daniels, known for his role in Dumb and Dumber, voiced strong criticism of Republican voters who supported former President Donald Trump, expressing hope that the financial consequences of Trump-era policies may prompt some to rethink their choices.
Speaking with MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on her podcast The Best People, Daniels reflected on the long-term strategy of Republican leaders like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. He said McConnell and others began reshaping the judicial system decades ago to counter the rise of a more diverse and inclusive America.
“They could see it coming,” Daniels said, referring to changing demographics. “And now, you got it, and now you’re losing money. I hope you’re losing tons of money, those of you who thought this would be OK.”
Wallace brought up the economic impacts of Trump’s trade tariffs, particularly in states like Michigan, which supported Trump again in 2020. Daniels agreed, saying the financial toll of rising prices could ultimately lead to broader disillusionment with Trump.
“‘Wait a minute, the grocery bill is what? $180 more? … Who do I blame for that?’ One person,” Daniels said, calling Trump a “snake oil salesman.”
Wallace argued that America’s political divide is no longer just about policy differences, but about a deeper loss of “decency” in public life. She noted how economic concerns—such as cheaper goods—have sometimes come at the cost of values like fairness and empathy.
Daniels concluded that while promises of economic relief may have won over voters, the actual consequences—such as increased costs—may ultimately shape public opinion more than political rhetoric.
