The unrelenting violence in the Ranbir Kapoor blockbuster is not at all mindless. It speaks to a wide audience that feels emasculated by the rising outspokenness of women.
“If you take…what we really are as human beings, that part of our nature which is purely physical, animal in a sense, where survival kicks in and that sort of thing, what is it really? Can violence ultimately be evolved out of our species?” This question, Martin Scorsese explained in an interview in 2010, is one reason that has constantly drawn him to violence as a theme.
Voices have been particularly raised on this subject in India since the release of the writer-director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal (Hindi) starring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna.
