Former Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the early frontrunner in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary, according to a new poll released Monday by Echelon Insights.
Harris, who lost the 2024 general election to President Donald Trump in a historic landslide, received 26% support among Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters surveyed. She holds a double-digit lead over her closest competitors, with former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg polling at 11% and California Governor Gavin Newsom at 10%.
Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey followed with 7% support, while New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came in fifth at 6%. Another 13% of respondents said they were undecided, signaling a still-fluid race more than two years ahead of the primary contests.
In a scenario where Harris was excluded from the poll — amid reports she is considering a gubernatorial run in California — support for Buttigieg and Newsom ticked up slightly to 12% each. Ocasio-Cortez rose to 9%, edging out Booker (8%) and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who climbed into the top five with 7%.
On the Republican side, Vice President JD Vance held a commanding lead, drawing support from 42% of GOP and GOP-leaning voters. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trailed far behind at 9%, placing Vance 33 points ahead of his nearest rival.
